Haida Gwaii
SELES was used to support land-use planning on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), BC, through work by Andrew Fall and Dan O'Brien. The project built a spatial timber supply model alongside ecological indicator models to analyze timber supply and ecological risk across a range of planning scenarios, informing the broader Haida Gwaii Land Use Planning process.
BCMPB Provincial Scale Mountain Pine Beetle Projection
A team from the BC Forest Service, Gowlland Technologies, University of Toronto, and Canadian Forest Service built a provincial-scale mountain pine beetle (MPB) model in SELES, paired with a forest management submodel. Using survey data from 1999–2005, the project produced a spatially and temporally explicit projection of the ongoing MPB outbreak at a provincial scale, informing decisions by senior managers and scientists. The beetle and management submodels were developed in parallel by separate teams — a collaborative approach the project reported as improving overall model quality.
